Buddhist

Mount Holyoke College’s Office of Religious and Spiritual Life supports a Buddhist group on campus, called Buddhist In Gathering (BIG). Advisor, Rebecca Bradshaw conducts Mindfulness Mediation once a week in the quiet of the Abbey Interfaith Sanctuary. Check the Weekly Events listing for the day and time.

Buddhists in Gathering (BIG) meets weekly to socialize and share discussions and information about Buddhist philosophy and teachings.  BIG also sponsors Buddhist speakers and events on campus; we have hosted Buddist teacher Tara Brach (author of Radical Acceptance), Zen priest and social activist Ryumon Hilda Gutierrez (editor of Dharma, Color and Culture), the monks and nuns of Thich Nhat Hanh, Karma Lekshe Tsomo (activist for rights of Buddhist nuns), and Buddhist singer Ravenna Michaelson.

Mindfulness meditation (also known as vipassana or insight meditation) is the simple and direct practice of moment-to-moment awareness of our experience.  Through this practice, we develop deepening understanding that leads to greater peace of mind and happiness.  Although mindfulness meditation originated with the teachings of the Buddha, it has become widely recognized in American society as a powerful technique for personal growth, stress reduction and spiritual development, and it is widely practiced by people from many different religious traditions.  All are welcome at our meditation and other events.

For more information, please contact Rebecca Bradshaw. To be put on the Buddhist email list for updates on our upcoming events, please fill out a Contact Request Form.
