To support study abroad, Mount Holyoke offers the Laurel Fellowship, which is awarded on a competitive basis. For the academic year 2008-2009, approximately 93% of eligible applicants were approved for Laurel Fellowships. All awards are based on financial aid eligibility and academic accomplishments. In many cases, students who study abroad are also eligible for federal aid. Mount Holyoke scholarships and grants do not travel with students while they study abroad. Laurel Fellowships are the only form of financial aid given by Mount Holyoke for study abroad.
Institutional merit-based scholarships, town grants, and employment-based aid (such as tuition exchange) generally do not travel. Students who would be eligible for need-based aid if they were not receiving these awards may apply for Laurel Fellowships. Students may use Mount Holyoke Leadership Awards and 21st Century Scholarships to participate in certain reciprocal exchanges in which they would pay Mount Holyoke tuition. These exchanges are with Ewha Woman's University, Sookmyung Women's University, Japan Women's University, Hong Kong University, and Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). However, exchange places are limited, and we generally will give priority to students who are eligible for need-based financial aid.
For information about programs, available funds, and application procedures, visit the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives.
Limited financial assistance is available for the Twelve College Exchange* and the College's other exchange programs. Priority is given to students who can demonstrate that off-campus study is an integral element of their academic program.
For information and application procedures visit Twelve College Exchange or contact Joanne Picard, dean of international studies, at 413-538-2072.
* The Twelve College Exchange allows a semester or year of study at Amherst, Bowdoin, Connecticut, Dartmouth, Smith, Trinity, Vassar, Wellesley, Wheaton, and Williams Colleges (including the Williams-Mystic Seaport Program), Wesleyan University, or the National Theater Institute.
