I made tuition payments in 2007. Why am I not seeing an amount in Box 1? Schools choose to report in either Box 1 or Box 2. MHC reports in Box 2.
The 1098T form covers calendar year 2007– why am I seeing spring, 2008 tuition charges? Spring semester 2008 tuition charges and related financial aid were billed in December, 2007. Since Form 1098-T is for calendar year 2007, these items are included on the Form 1098-T for 2007.
There are numbers listed in Box 4 “Adjustments made for a prior year” – why are they there? IRS now requires institutions to report any "adjustments” to prior year tuition. Since Mount Holyoke billed spring semester 2007 tuition in December 2006 any adjustment to that tuition would be considered a prior year adjustment.
There are numbers listed in Box 6 “Adjustments to scholarships or grants for a prior year” – why are they there? IRS now requires institutions to report any "adjustments” to prior year scholarships and grants. Since Mount Holyoke billed spring semester 2007 tuition in December 2006 any adjustment to scholarships or grants for that period would be considered a prior year adjustment.
I was abroad for part or all of 2007 and my 1098-T tuition amount seems low. Why? Depending on the program you attended, you may have been billed a comprehensive fee that included room & board and other charges that are not deductible. The amount shown on your 1098-T has been adjusted to reflect deductible and non-deductible fees.
My Form 1098-T indicates that I was better than half-time for calendar year 2007, but I graduated in May. If I wasn’t at MHC for the entire year, why am I still considered better than half-time? You received a 1098-T because you were half-time for at least one semester.
I was a first year student in the fall, 2007. How come my Form 1098-T shows an entire year of charges, rather than just the fall, 2007? The 1098-T form reflects any charges during calendar year 2007. Spring 2008 charges were billed in December 2007, so your 1098-T shows both your Fall 2007 semester and Spring 2008 semester charges.
My 1098-T form doesn’t have a Social Security number – why? MHC did not have a social security number on file. You will need to go to the registrar’s office and submit a copy of your social security card.
I am an international student and did not receive a 1098-T form – why? Institutions are not required to issue a 1098-T form to international students unless a student specifically requests one. If you would like to request a form, you can email Deborah Johnson at or call 413-538-2253.
I am a U.S. citizen and did not receive a 1098-T form – why? We believe we have issued a 1098-T form to all students who had tuition charges or financial aid in calendar year 2007. If you did not receive a Form 1098-T, and believe that you were entitled to receive one, please email Deborah Johnson at or call 413-538-2253 and we will research your specific information.
