Don't Let Thieves Ruin Your Event

Did you know that thefts of wallets, cameras, cell phones, etc are common at MHC events? In many instances, multiple thefts have occurred at a single event!

All it takes is one individual in a dark room full of unattended ‘easy pickings’ to turn a success into a loss….not only for those who are robbed, but a loss of trust and security for all. MHC is generally a safe place, but parties & other events are well known targets for those with criminal intent. Take action to stop theft.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Post the signs included in the PartyBox alerting your guests to the risk.

  2. Watch the crowd for suspicious behavior. Individuals or groups lingering near coats or bags or moving from one area to the next are causes for concern. Thieves target unattended belongings. Watch your stuff!

  3. Alert the Public Safety staff on duty if you have any concerns. You do not need to wait for a theft or other incident to occur. Trust your instincts & let Public Safety know early so they can monitor the situation and take action as necessary. Do not confront the suspect(s) yourself. This is a job for professionals!

  4. Don't leave valuables unattended and encourage others to secure their belongings. Have one person in a group keep watch, or return unnecessary valuables to their room. Help your guests prevent loss by noticing if they are leaving items unattended & recommending that they take better care. Allow them to leave and return if necessary.

  5. Host a Coat Check service or invite another Student Org to do so. Coat Checks can be a great, low-risk fundraiser for an org.
