Material Evidence: Women and the Tangible Past

The past comes to life in art. The past is kept alive by stories. Our three panelists are artists and historians who deftly interweave the historical past and our collective present. Visual artist and acclaimed quilter L’Merchie Frazier will showcase her chronicles of the African American past and the dramatic roles that women and stories have played in American history. Margaret Bruchac will consider the tensions between Native American facts and American fictions, especially as they relate to the trope of the “vanishing Indian.” Deborah Roth-Howe will revisit the traumatic history of the Holocaust and her efforts to reconstruct, to preserve, and to use constructively the memories of her victimized family members and the family artifacts that keep their memories alive.
