Yankee Pride and Prejudice: Slavery in New EnglandSlavery was a part of New England life, trade, and society as early as 1638. Our three panelists have explored that past which for many remains unexpected and seems to be out of place. Hartford Courant journalists Anne Farrow and Jennifer Frank are co-authors of the dynamic volume, Complicity: How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery. Katrina Browne is a documentary filmmaker with ties to the powerful slave-trading DeWolfe family of Rhode Island. Join us for a screening of excerpts from Traces of the Trade, Browne’s work-in-progress,
and a dynamic discussion about colonial and antebellum histories of enslavement
in New England and a consideration of how that shared history has shaped
our contemporary debates about race and region.
