Got politics? Got Thought? The
Catalyst wants to get you.
How to help us out: guidelines for submissions (below)
and how to volunteer
Submissions
We accept submissions on a rolling basis for our political
magazine. Work should be no more than 1,500 words (if written )
or 7"x7" (for artwork). Issues should be political or
otherwise socially-concious in nature.
Recent submissions have included:
- a critical analysis of the Francis Perkins's legacy as
relates to current administrative policy at MHC
- an examination of increasingly popular legislation
targeting mothers who use illegal drugs
- an editorial on vegetarianism
- reports on foreign policy changes in various countries
We also accept political cartoons and other visual art
addressing social concerns.
Tips on submitting successfully:
- Choose a topic not prone to overkill. You are welcome to
submit work on fair trade, corporate dominance, George W.
Bush, and other frequently discussed matters, but be
aware that the Catalyst will only print so many pieces
regarding the same issue.
- Submit your work via email, preferably as a text-only
attachment. If you submit through the box in the post
office, please include your name and email address.
- If the piece has been published elsewhere, make sure you
retain the rights to republish.
- Use good technique:
· Write clearly and be reasonably
concise. Proofread!
· While your presentation need not parallel
that of a term paper, do reference facts when
dealing
with questionable issues.
· Don't make excessive personal
references in objective pieces.
· Criticize, but don't vilify. Be
radical, not cruel.
- Issues we don't hear enough about include the environment
and conservation, classism, racism, sexuality and gender
concerns, internal affairs of the US, history, and
political theory.
- Underemployed technique includes non-written work (cartoons,
etc.), manifesto-style writing, and humor.
- Submissions of excessive length, those addressing overly
popular issues, and those which, for other reasons, can
not be published in the print version of The Catalyst
may be pubilished online.
Direct submissions and questions to sca@ifairtrade.net.
