WHAT ARE TEMPORARY WORKERS?

Temporary workers are hired by a department through an agency to do the same work as regular Mount Holyoke staff but for less pay, no benefits, and no job security. In the state of Massachusetts, someone can be working as a "temporary worker" indefinitely. Mount Holyoke has kept the "temporary" status for people who have worked here for as long as 9 months.

Poor Wages
Receive about $9/hour, which is less than the pay for comparable full-time workers.
Undermines Secure, Quality Jobs
Temporary work takes the place of full-time workers.

This combination of poor wages and uncertainty about the future make it difficult for temporary workers to take care of themselves and their families.

      Illegal fees

Because of illegal fees, day laborers do not even make minimum wage. Last year alone, Labor Ready made one billion dollars off of illegal fees. Without even including the hours of waiting before they can work, these deductions drag down day laborer wages to below minimum wage. Day laborers get $6.75/hour out of the estimated $19/hour that their staffing agency receives from the users. They are forced to pay $4 for
transportation
to and from the job site, and $1 plus change to use an
illegal check-cashing machine
. Workers must pay for safety equipment and are charged when it is damaged by the normal wear-and-tear of
construction work.
This is not just unfair, it also breaks state wage and hour laws.
