Timeline of Events:
-
In September the housekeepers approached the SCA, asking for student support
as they go through the process of deciding whether or not to unionize.
-
The housekeepers decided to work with UAW 2322, students were in no way
a part of this decision, and the SCA's official position on unionization
is neutral-- our role as students is to educate the community and let the
housekeepers know that we will support them regardless of their decision.
-
To show administrators that students and faculty expect the process to
be fair, a petition was circulated asking the college to act in a neutral
manner. Over 1000 students and faculty signed.
-
The college has been holding mandatory captive audience meetings weekly
with housekeepers, letting them know they don't see a union as the best
solution to their problems. Some housekeeping staff felt that their benefits
were threatened at one of these meetings.
-
At the vote on November 30th, a majority of housekeepers decided that they
would organize.
Upcoming:
As the Housekeepers work with their first contract and new union, we
will continue to support them in their struggle for equity in the workplace.
We will also work for a Code of Conduct that will offer further protections
for all MHC workers.
