Welcome to the official website of the Mount Holyoke College Democrats. As members of the Mount Holyoke community, the College Democrats are proud to carry on the College's history of political activism in one of the most culturally and academically vibrant regions of the country. Mount Holyoke was founded in 1837 and is the first of the Seven Sisters, the female equivalent of the formerly all-male Ivy League. Since its founding, Mount Holyoke has been educating future leaders in all areas of academia, especially in the area of politics and government. Among the most prominent female politicians from MHC are Frances Perkins '02, the first woman appointed to a presidential cabinet; Ella Grasso '40, the first female governor to be elected in her own right; U.S. Congresswoman Nita Lowey '59, who currently represents New York's 18th district; and current Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao '75, the first Chinese American to be appointed to a presidential cabinet.
