Chewy- Previously a show hunter, Chewy has found a new career in the dressage program since coming to Mount Holyoke. A sensitive, yet willing Thoroughbred, Chewy teaches his rider the art of soft, steady contact, and quiet riding. Accurately named, we are all "privileged" to learn from Chewy.
Irish Myth (Blinky) - Blinky is a chestnut Irish thoroughbred who came to MHC from alumna Annie Shaker. Blinky’s former career was as a jumper, but he has taken to dressage with amazing alacrity. Scoring 70 percent at Training Level, Test 4 in the summer of 2005, Blinky is a pleasure to ride—light in the hand and quick to the aids.
C'est Vrai (Dijon)- Like Chewy, Dijon was a competitive show hunter in his past life. However, he recently made a career change and has proven himself to be a dependable and talented addition to our family! A versatile horse, Dijon is a patient teacher for beginners, and a quick learner with advanced riders. Showing off his true potential as a member of the dressage team, Dijon competed quite successfully with many riders at the IDA National Championships at Cazenovia, NY.
Just Jake (Jake)- Jake arrived at Mount Holyoke donated by Madison and Judy Jones. He had belonged to their daughter Hilary and had been in training at Apple Valley Farm. Jake is a very talented dressage horse, winning the First Level division at our spring 2006 Home Show with a score in the 70's.
Our Retired Horses:
They were much loved and will be sorely missed, but are happy in their new homes.
Troubador (Trubi )- Trubi, a 16.2 hand liver chestnut Hanoverian, has been a member of the Mount Holyoke Dressage program since January of 2002. Since day one, he has been one of the favorites. A kind and experienced horse, Trubi has taught students countless skills from the basics of putting a horse on the bit to how to ride half pass and flying changes. In November 2004 Trubi left MHC to go to his new home. He is now doing some dressage work and trail riding with an older dressage rider. He is very happy and is enjoying all day turnout and lots of personal attention.
Mesquite (Moose)- At 17.2 hands, Mesquite is truly a gentle giant! Before joining the program in January 2003, he competed at 4th Level and trained at the 4th/PSG Levels of dressage competition. As one of our three schoolmasters, Mesquite teaches riders the importance of forward, yet finessed riding, as well as advanced lateral and collected movements. Along with Dijon and Wotan, Mesquite represented the Mount Holyoke Dressage Team family at the IDA National Championships in Cazenovia, NY this year. He was in the top 3 placings during both days of the competition. Mesquite has recently moved to his new home with a Mt Holyoke alum, where he will get lots of personal attention and turnout.
Wellinguard (Wellie)- Wellie came to us in the winter of 2005. He is trained to third level dressage, and is just settling into the rigors of school life. He has beautiful suspended movement and a powerful engine. He was a much loved and adorable addition to our program.
Our dressage horses are available for lease over the summer, and during January term. If you are interested in leasing a dresage horse (or any other MHC school horse) over january term or during the summer, please contact Paula Pierce (MHC Equestrian Center Director)
