The
Jewish Student Union (JSU) at Mount Holyoke College is one
of nine active faith groups that work out of the Office of
Spiritual and Religious Life. We are a social, cultural,
and religious organization serving the needs of students
interested in Judaism.
The
JSU is where students can actively participate in furthering
their knowledge of cultural and spiritual Judaism through
fun activities and community building.
The
JSU is also a part of the 5-college Hillel. This Hillel is
comprised of Mount Holyoke and the four other colleges in
the surrounding area (Smith, Amherst, Hampshire, and UMASS
Amherst). The 5-college Hillel is staffed and organized by
the 5-college Rabbis and JSU leaders. There are a number
of activities that the 5-college Hillel participates in,
such as: Simchat Torah, Purim, Yom Ha'atzmaut, and other
cultural events (ex. Jewish concert).
Shabbat
services are held every Friday. The first Friday of every
month the Jewish Community holds Community Shabbat Dinner.
They begin at 6 pm in Eliot
House, followed by Shabbat services. For the rest of
the month Shabbat dinner is held in Wilder's Kosher/ Halal
Dining Hall and services are held in Wilder's Living Room.
Shabbat services are led by the JSU Chaplin, Lisa
Freitag-Keshet and students.
We
have regular cultural events, social meetings, and host special
events, such as annual Latke/Hamantashen Debate and two Passover
sedars, including a Feminist Sedar. |
