The elders say that “it is only when a child has washed her hands, can she eat with queens”. For me, to be nominated and asked to represent MHACASA as the African co-chair is like the child who has been given that privilege to feast with queens.

This position which has been bestowed upon me is by every means a momentous task which seeks true leadership. And it has been said that with true leadership comes true responsibilities. Having served on the MHACASA board twice; first as an ALANA representative and subsequently as the African SGA representative was a refining process. This was a process through which I learned how to “wash my hands” and learned what real leadership entails. However, these have not been my only learning experiences. Everyday represents the chance for me to learn something new and grow as a person.

Being an active member of MHACASA and serving on the board has never been about what MHACASA can do for me, but what I can for MHACASA with what I know and what I have. I will not deny that this journey has been full of road bumps. There have been days when I have felt like giving up and wondered why I was giving so much to MHACASA when all people did was to complain. Despite these setbacks, I was constantly drawn back to how much I loved MHACASA.

If I should say that I am confident that next year MHACASA will be problem free then that will not be true. I cannot make promises because I am human and bound to make mistakes. However, I have unwavering hope that MHACASA will taken to greater heights. It is not the task of one person or the board to make MHACASA what it should be or where it should go. Rather it takes the dedication and determination of everyone who has a stake in it to take it far.

With God as my help, it is my hope that if there is only one thing I can do in my tenure as the African co-chair that it would be to inspire others and to rejuvenate the passion and love that people once had for MHACASA.

Hi MHACASA Ladies

AC Day 2008 was the first time a “Making of AC Day” video was made and in the beginning there was an animation of a bus making a journey from African and the Caribbean to Mount Holyoke. It was representative of the journey we have taken to be here, in a new place that is different from our homes. To find a solution to this problem, to create a home away from home there was the creation of MHACASA which has continually provide a home for us here.

I have this great opportunity to serve this organization; to help in the preservation of this sisterhood that was created. I am hardworking, dedicated and committed to MHACASA and its further development. I have served the board before as an intercollegiate representative and a social chair and have gained valuable experience through the work that was done with the other members of the board and with the organization. I am ready to take on the responsibilities that are associated with the position I was nominated for.

MHACASA has a huge place in my heart and it would be a great honor if I was selected to be apart of a board that is willing to work together and with the organization to make it better than it already is. With that in mind, my name is Kadian Collie and I am running for Caribbean Co-Chair.

Thank you

VOTE FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SGA Platform

As the SGA representative I plan on having MHACASA's voice heard more in Senate. I hope to do so through the following means.
1. Send out the senate agenda to the org prior to SGA meetings
2. Inform you of issues SGA wishes to vote on prior to the actual vote. This way I wish to get a general consensious from the Org before I make the vote.
3. I plan on working with the SGA representatives of the different MHC orgs similar to ours to find ways for our Org Chairs to have time in senate so that the greater MHC campus has greater knowledge of our org and its runnings.
4. I will continue the work that this year's senators have done by reporting back to the org about the Senate meetings, as well as reporting directly to you when we have MHACASA meetings.
Finally I hope to be in greater contact with the Chair of Organization and Public Relations officer as to have more of a say in E-board decisions, in hopes that what has presided in the Presidental search committee does not happen again.
Having served on SGA this past year as a Hall representative, I am familiar with the senate protocol and I plan on using the knowledge I have gained this past year to have MHACASA's concerns and events be well known throughout the campus.

Secretary Platform:

AS MHACASA's Secretary, I will be committed to informing the org on issues presented  at
general meetings and board meetings. As a member of the Honor council in High School, I
know how important minute details are in conveying the right message, I will use the
skills I gained from being a member of this council to better inform MHACASA members as
well as the greater student body about pressing MHACASA issues. I have captained squash
teams and been central to leadership in roles in high school as a proctor/prefect.. I
would say that being captain of a squash team has helped flourish my skills as a leader
as I have had to build up team moral when we did not win, but more importantly I built a
strong team bond, in a sport of individuals. I do posses leadership qualities and will be
ready to step in for our co-chairs should they not be available. I hope that you will
allow me to be your secretary-general to continue to steer MHACASA into its rightful path
on campus.

Hello, lovely ladies of MHACASA!!!!

My name is Naa Abia Ofosu-Amaah, class of 2010 and I would like to be your next ALANA rep. The job of the ALANA rep is to “coordinate the recognition, acknowledgment and organization of New African and Caribbean students and to maintain a network with African and Caribbean Alumnae”. I am very outgoing and it will be no challenge whatsoever for me to make new students feel welcome on our campus. I have been a very active member of MHACASA ever since my first year here at MHC and through my preparations for events such as African Caribbean Day, Dessertmania, and of course the good times at our awesome parties I have built long lasting friendships with MHACASA members.

Even though women of color are highly marketed on this campus, we know that our representation in the most influencial committees is minimal. I intend to assist in the recruiting of strong and influential young women from Africa and the Caribbean in order to increase the involvement of African and Caribbean first years in the Mount Holyoke community. As the ALANA Representative, I will ensure that our incoming students and present MHACASA members are readily connected with alumnae. With me as the ALANA rep for 2009, the endless network between alumnae, incoming and upper-class women at MHC, is assured!

Caribbean SGA Rep Platform
As a Hispanic/Caribbean woman I am committed to insuring that the voices of students of color on campus are heard. I am fully committed to listening to every MHACASA member?s needs and taking that information to SGA meetings as the Caribbean representative of MHACASA. I know that it is a great responsibility to be an intermediary between SGA and the members of MHACASA, so I will take great effort to perform the position with great attention. I am on the board for the ALANA orientation (Passages), so I have been exposed to the responsibility of having others depend on me. I also work for the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts. This job experience has given me exposure to researching and planning events, which I know are tools needed to carry out many activities that MHACASA organizes. I feel very motivated by my own desires to ensure that all our voices are heard. If given the opportunity I will prove to be a strong advocate for MHACASA during the 2009-2010 school year.

ALANA Rep Platform
ALANA is a group of letters that have become part of my everyday usage. I am proud to be a part of these letters and I give much respect to them, because they form my sisters of color. I know how important the word ALANA is on our campus and I aim to increase the number of us all at Mount Holyoke. As the MHACASA ALANA Representative I will fulfill my position not just by doing the duties the ALANA Rep is supposed to do, but by representing the voices of the MHCASA and the ALANA students on campus. Being a part of the ALANA orientation (Passages) has helped me identify the concerns and hopes the new ALANA students have for their time on campus. As the MHACASA ALANA Representative I will ensure that prospective students know of MHACASA and what we have to offer. I will also keep tabs on the incoming African and Caribbean students and let them know that MHCASA is on campus for them to join and feel at home. The ALANA position will afford me an opportunity to build bridges with other ALANA organizations on campus so that our combined efforts will go a long way in increasing awareness of our individual issues, increase support for our yearly causes and lay the ground work for cross cultural understanding.
Hi my name is Karene Thomas, I'm a rising senior with a major in Statistics and minor in African American Studies. Although it was a short lived experience I served on the board as an SGA Rep for Spring semester of 2008. Being member of MHACASA, has taught me to step outside of my comfort zone, and making the sacrifices for group that I care about(for example, although I may not be the best dancer I try to make the sacrifice very semester to help to make AC Day the success that it is every year, even if it means being part of one act). I'm aware of our different personalities within the organization however I believe that we do share similar issues as international students and members of the African and Caribbean community. Through the role of SGA representative I will be able to BE THE VOICE OF ALL THE UNHEARD VOICES WITHIN MHACASA. So vote for me YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! I’m Ewura-Esi Amoo-Gottfried and I’m running for the position of African Intercollegiate Representative.

This position requires me to:

• Update the organization on all the activities within the 5-college area.
• Work closely with the Social Chairs • Help publicize MHACASA events.

I am running for this particular position, because I actually think I would be able to do the three things listed above.

I may be the only person running, who has not been on the board before. So what do I bring to the table? A fresh perspective (which could be rather valuable)!

More importantly, I have always wanted to be more involved in MHACASA and to get to know its members better.

This position allows me to do this.

I really hope you give me a chance to do so!

Oh and remember, mine is probably the longest name with the many hyphens :).

Thank you!
I’m running for Caribbean SGA Representative because as an organization I believe it is important to have our issues heard and to also be aware of all happenings in the SGA.

I should be elected the SGA Rep of Caribbean descent because I’ve been an active member of MHACASA for the past year, pitching in and helping out as needed. I’m also in tune with our issues as an org, and have been to the recent ALANA meetings, to get a better understanding of these issues. As such, I believe I am more than capable of performing the duties of this office efficiently. Since being on the board of WMHC, the campus radio station this semester, I have gained leadership experience, and other skills such as attention to detail, which may prove helpful in carrying out the duties as SGA rep.

If elected the Caribbean SGA rep for MHACASA I will uphold all duties of the office, including but not limited to:
•       Attending all SGA meetings
•       Acting as liaison between MHACASA and SGA
•       Reporting on all matters discussed in SGA
•       Working with African SGA rep to fulfil our responsibilities

I love MHACASA. MHACASA is in my heart. I have so much hope and faith in MHACASA and believe that we, as a unit, are capable of so much. This year with the new regulations, MHACASA did extremely well and provided many successful outreach events, but this year I believe something greater can be accomplished. I believe that MHACASA can grow as a name not only within the Five College area, but especially within Mount Holyoke as a family and as a sisterhood. Not only do I hope to continue making MHACASA successful in its usual events, and even more so, but I also hope to add more events, such as outings each semester, picnics/interaction sessions and an annual collaboration barbeque with other colleges. So far, I have developed necessary relationships within Mount Holyoke, the Five-college region and beyond with persons who can help make all these dreams a reality; and I possess the experience and drive to organize and follow through with plans to have and host fun, interactive and productive social events. To me, this is more than just a position, this is a movement! I’m not exaggerating; MHACASA is capable of great things! Let’s get it going!!!

To my dearest darlings,

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone for making AC Day a success. I was there in spirit and enjoyed looking at the pictures on Facebook. Whether you danced, cooked, decorated, cleaned or attended the show, I am sure your support was greatly appreciated. Once again, we displayed our beauty, strength, creativity and ability to work together as a team, and as a sisterhood.

Now down to business. I admit that I was shocked upon receiving the email from Jemila informing me that I had been nominated for Caribbean Co-chair and Caribbean Social Chair. It was an instantaneous moment of self-reflection as I evaluated my ability to serve MHACASA as well as she deserves to be treated. When I speak of MHACASA, not only am I referring to the organization and how she appears to the outside world, but moreover you. I thought of every one of us who make up this group, this society, this union of cultures, ideas and opinions. As a result, I decided that I would only be able to give my all as your Caribbean social chair if you so choose.

I often times invite friends to my house for ours devours or even a small party. However, before coming to Mount Holyoke, I was elected to be the Event Coordinator of another organization in my boarding school. The board members and the club at large admired my organizational and budgeting skills, as well as my efficiency in ensuring that all plans run smoothly. I present these two situations in an attempt to show my dynamism and diversity in handling whatever task I am faced with. Whether it is planning our parties throughout the year or all the festivities surrounding AC Day, events for Black History month or Africa Week, I am ready to tackle them all. I enjoy making sure all the food, decorations, entertainment and all other details are done to the best of my ability in order for all events to be successes.

Most importantly MHACASA, I want to emphasize that all these events are for all of us. I will need you input, your suggestions and your help in making each and every event a success in your eyes.

Good luck on everything as we near the end of another semester. For some, it was your first, for others, your last as a current Mount Holyoke student. Luckily, you will always be a Mount Holyoke woman but moreover and forever, a MHACASA queen.

Blessings, Love and Honor.

Natalia

The kikuyu money minded woman is back!!!!!

Hi guys, I am a rising senior majoring in Economics and Complex organizations. I hail from the city of sunshine in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2007-2008, I was the MHACASA treasurer and I drafted a budget proposal that FINALLY increased our SGA regular funding from a mediocre $800 to $2,500. That said, I still smell money, talk money, breath money and even dream money. I am looking forward to bringing new ideas from all my fundraising and organizational experience that I have acquired by working with Organizations like Project South in Atlanta and NACO in Boston.

As you can tell from my past results, I am a person that focuses on tangible goals and if elected, I promise to balance MHACASA’s statements to ensure that we always have funds that can sponsor a range of Org activities.

Vote for me!
Caroline a.k.a Kenyan Barbie!!!!

Spirited, Vibrant, People-Oriented, Social and Personable. These are traits necessary for the position of Intercollegiate Rep of MHACASA and happen to my five of my most key qualities. Though I have not yet finished my first year at Mount Holyoke College, I have already made vital contacts throughout the five college area. Given my exuberant and inclusive personality, attaining contacts in other areas such as Boston, New York and anywhere within the surrounding region is not likely to be very challenging. Not only do I have no problem interacting with members of other schools in hopes to create a tighter five college community, but I look forward to being an agent of enhancing community with our fellow African and Caribbean students and organizations. I know that I have the qualifications and traits necessary to fulfill my role as a board member of MHACASA and make the academic year of 2009-2010 a very successful year for the organization, both among our members and with the rest of the five college area, and beyond. I want to be, and should be the Caribbean Intercollegiate Rep for MHACASA 2009-2010.

Hello ladies, As you all know, I'm Zeinab Cama. This academic year, I was the African intercollegiate rep and I've been involved as much as possible not only with the board but also with the entire org.  I'm now running for the African Social chair position.  As a Social chair I will try my best to come up with innovative activities that will focus on unifying the members of the org. These fun activities (i.e. movies/games nights, dialogues, community services and of course Parties!!!) will enable us to form solid bonds with each other and learn to appreciate our similarities and differences. Not only are we going to enjoy each other's presence, but we will also raise awareness on the campus and beyond.  My goal as a social chair is to create an environment where we'll function as a family, not only as mere members. Forget the 'cliques' and the little judgments that prevent us from getting to know and enjoy each other!! !!! So vote for me!!!

A picture is worth a thousand words. MHACASA'S visual representation is worth more. I am
passionate about Art, and I would love to put my good skills to use. As your next web
historian, I am ready to put together sophistication and beauty to project the intricate
qualities that our organization holds as one of the strongest cultural groups on campus.
There is only one nominee, and there will be only one vote?
