Naginata 101:

Counting:

Counting is done in Japanese, and during taiso(warm up exercises), the leader counts from 1-8, then everyone else counts 1-8 as well(however the group counts 2 twice, then 3, 4, 5...)

1 : ichi
2 : ni
3 : san
4 : shi
5 : go
6 : roku
7 : shichi
8 : hachi
9 : kyu
10: jyuu

Shizentai: known as 'natural, relaxed stance.' One should be standing straight, holding the naginata in the right hand. Right hand wrist should be touching the hipbone, and the ishizuki(butt) of the naginata should be about an inch away from the pinky toe knuckle. One should be relaxed

Shoumen: In dojos, is the shrine located in the front of the dojo. Before one may practice, they must pay respects to the shoumen. The shrine itself can have objects ranging from photos of senseis, incense, as well as calligraphy scrolls. Sometimes, there's nothing there at all--however the shoumen is clearly defined at the bow-in.
