Mike
Retelle is a Quaternary Geologist who has been at Bates College
since 1987. His primary teaching and research interests are in the
fields of glacial and Quaternary Geology with specific interests
in modern surficial processes and paleoenvironmental records from
glacial, lacustrine, and marine sediments in Maine and the Canadian
arctic. He teaches courses in introductory geology (The Surface
of the Earth and Global Environmental Change), Sedimentology, Quaternary
Geology, and two field courses, Limnology and Paleolimnology and
Glaciation of Northern New England. He has advised over 50 senior
thesis students in the required year-long senior thesis program
at Bates. A large number of these students participated in field
and subsequent laboratory research on projects related to arctic
climate change that include monitoring lacustrine processes, mapping
glacial and marine deposits, and working up detailed paleoclimate
records from laminated lake sediments.
