Passing Glances
Janet Li. I first understood the true power of words when, at nine years of age, Istarted to keep a journal as a way to explore and understand the new feelings and events that occurred in my life. Eleven years and six volumes later, I still marvel at the fact that writing has the unique power of transforming individual, human thought into a tangible medium capable of being understood by many. As a Writing Fellow at Barnard, I live for the "A-ha!" moments that occur when meeting with fellowees-that is, the moments when intangible thought becomes into clear, sparkling prose. Currently, I'm really interested in literature that deals with migration (esp. from China to the United States), as well as the various problems and nuances in Chinese-to-English text translation. How these interests translate into a career in the future is still a bit of a mystery to me, but whatever I do, I hope to use my interests as a way to build bridges of understanding between diverse cultures.
