Mentors & Assistants
Mentor Program SAW mentors operate in the context of a specific course. They actively work to enhance the classroom experience by offering individual and group guidance to students. They often are students who have previously taken the course and/or are majors in the department through which the course is offered.
Like assistants, all mentors complete "Peer Mentoring: Theory and Practice," a semester-long course in which students learn to work collaboratively on speaking and writing projects. However, a mentor's specific responsibilities depend largely on the needs and plans of the course instructor. She attends courses regularly and also may contribute during in-class writing or speaking exercises. In addition, she is available for individual and/or group help sessions outside of class.
Assistant Program Students who staff the SAW Center in the Williston Library work with all members of the College community on a variety of writing and speaking projects. They provide appointment and walk-in service in the form of individual and group help sessions. SAW assistants and mentors share the general goal of improving the clarity and impact of oral and written communication.
Like SAW mentors, all assistants complete "Peer Mentoring: Theory and Practice," a semester-long course in which students learn to work collaboratively on speaking and writing projects. Assistants offer consultation at any stage of the writing, speaking, and research process. SAW assistants provide support for students working on a wide range of projects that include short and long essays, lab reports, fellowship applications, senior theses, and oral and multimedia presentations.
