Process at-a-Glance

• Attend the Faculty Information Session on Thursday, March 27, 12:15 pm in the Porter Hall Lounge.
• Submit a request online by Monday, April 7. Please note: All faculty who hope to work with a mentor must complete an online request.
• Faculty/mentor pairings will be announced by Friday, May 16.
• Meet with your mentor before class begins to discuss mutual expectations (attend Faculty/Mentor Meet and Greet reception).
• Submit completed faculty/mentor expectations worksheet to the SAW Program offices by the start of fall classes.

New This Year
All faculty/mentor pairings will be decided by the SAW Coordinator. Faculty should submit their requests each semester directly to the SAW Coordinator via the online request form. The Program is not able to recognize arrangements made independently with students or those assumed to be automatic from previous semesters. Late requests will be reviewed but may not result in a mentor placement.

Requesting to Work with a Former Student
If you would like to request to work with a student who is not currently a mentor in the SAW Program, be advised that all SAW mentors complete a rigorous application and interview process and take a semester-long, credit-bearing course prior to their work in the program. Former students are not immediately eligible for mentoring.

Faculty/Mentor Pairings
Because the role of a SAW Mentor is to work with your students to develop their skills as writers and public speakers—not to teach course materials—any of our mentors on staff, regardless of their particular major, are prepared to work with your students.

Hiring Practices
SAW hires students who will be productive facilitators of writing and public speaking across the entire MHC campus. Our SAW student staff work in multiple classrooms, in the SAW Center, as collaborators on scholarship, as representatives at national and international conferences, and as leaders among their peers. We invest our time and funding in students who will be strong ambassadors of the broader work of the SAW Program. We welcome your nominations of student whom we might invite to apply to our program.
