SAW Student Scholarship

Committed to their own professional development and ongoing education, SAW student staff are also actively involved in seeking to spotlight the SAW program as a leader among writing and speaking programs across the country. Each semester a group of SAW student staff members join SAW administrative faculty and staff to present their work at regional and national conferences. Participation in recent conferences include

Spring 2007

The North East Writing Centers Association (NEWCA) Annual Conference at the University of Connecticut, Storrs

The Acting SAW Coordinator (Michelle Deal) and the SAW Assistant Coordinator for Speaking (Kirsten Isgro) collaborated with three SAW student staff members (Mimi Filipova, Joan Tsang, and Mara Caden) on a presentation titled “Beyond Writing Centers: Classroom Mentoring and Public Speaking.”

Fall 2007

The 25th Annual National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) at Pennsylvania State University

The SAW Coordinator (Laura Greenfield) collaborated with four SAW student staff members (Joan Tsang, Aviva Elzufon, Kirbi Kidd, and Christine Yieleh-Chireh) on a presentation titled “Leadership, Writing, and Public Speaking: Transferable Tutoring Methodologies at an All-Women's College”

Spring 2008

The North East Writing Centers Association (NEWCA) Conference at the University of Vermont

The SAW Coordinator (Laura Greenfield) and Assistant Coordinators (Kirsten Isgro and Kim Parent) collaborated with six SAW student staff members (Vidya Raghavan, Supriya Sharma, Kirbi Kidd, Sarah McKnight, Mika Weissbuch, and Jihye Sharon So) on two presentations titled “Restarting the Science Writing Mission: New Approaches to Specialist versus Generalist Tutoring, Confidence Building, and Advertising” and Alternative Contexts for Writing Center Theory: Mentoring ESOL Students in a Public Speaking Class.”

The SAW Program is pleased to announce that it will host the 27th Annual National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing on our MHC campus. More information coming soon!
