Coca-Cola, 1942

"At ease...for refreshment."

"There's something about the soda fountain...something inviting. And there's something about ice-cold "Coca-Cola"... a delicious taste...an after-sense of refreshment. No wonder you hear so often those passwords to a delightful experience... "Coca-Cola," or the friendly abbreviation, "Coke."

Despite the fact that Coke was sometimes in short supply on the homefront, it became indisputably connected to the American Serviceman. Coca-Cola's president Robert Woodruff pledged: "We will see that every man in uniform gets a bottle of Coca-Cola for five cents wherever he is and whatever it costs."

During World War II, more than five billion bottles of Coke went to the men and women in the service. To be as close to combat areas as possible, the Coca-Cola Company erected 64 bottling plants around the world to see that every serviceman had his Coke.
