ADVERTISEMENTS

As American companies transformed into wartime production during the Second World War, advertising also went through a transformation. The ads themselves document the transformation of American industry as ad campaigns went from selling a product to selling a war. Wartime images blended patriotism with propaganda. These images informed, entertained, and encouraged the folks at home as well as the soldiers abroad. Famous brands affected the American marketplace, not only revealing the average citizen's participation, but also the national corporation's participation to rally public support. Wartime advertising is sometimes considered controversial as images of aircraft and combat were often exhibited. Surveys showed soldiers liked to look at ads that reminded them of home and the advertisements display pretty girls, morale boosting tableaux, and vivid American imagery. In order to keep the company name out there, while not necessarily promoting their product, American corporations produced ads promoting the war effort, and below are ads which display such efforts.
