Died: September 1997 in Morocco
: find death

The Beginnings:

Mobutu Sese Seko (Joseph Desire Mobutu) was born on October 14th, 1930 in the village of Usidla. As a young man he served in the Belgian colonial army, rising up to the highest rank for an African native at that time. He also worked as a journalist and was a member of Lumumba’s political party.

In 1960 when Lumumba became prime minister, he appointed Mobutu as Chief of State of the army. On September 14th 1960, Mobutu staged a military overthrow of the government in favor of president Kasavubo (who had opposing view points than that of Lumumba his prime minister). He accomplished his coup with the backing of the United States and CIA involvement. Lumumba went into hiding, but was assassinated the following year. Today, new evidence in regards to Lumumba’s death, points to Mobutu and covert CIA operations. (3)
