Self Appointed Ruler: Mobutu gained complete political power
in 1965, when he self declared himself as president of the Congo.
Then in
1970 he began an anti-European,
pro-African cultural awareness ideology, commencing with the renaming
of the Congo to the Republic of Zaire in 1971. He also changed his
own name from Joseph Desire Mobutu to “Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku
Ngbendu Wa Za Bango, which can be loosely translated to “the
all conquering warrior who triumphs over all obstacles. (Kelly 1)”
