the Golden Temple

The Golden Temple in the city of Amritsar, located in Punjab, India, is a marvelous sight to behold. Great golden spires rise up from the beautiful main building, Akal Takht, and smooth marble walkways and steps lead all around the temple grounds. This breathtaking structure is the Sikhs most holy temple, and has been for more than four hundred years. The Golden Temple is considered by some to be the most beautiful sight in all of India, even outdoing the Taj Mahal.

Yet even the most dreamy-eyed observer cannot fail to notice the patches of marble covering certain areas of the wall that are different in shade and texture. These newer pieces of marble were used to cover up bullet holes. It is with these patches of marble that a dark part of history resurfaces, and everyone must remember what came to pass at this holy place in 1984: Operation Bluestar, otherwise known as the Golden Temple Massacre.
