There are continued tensions in the current state of Xinjiang--they stem from the Uyghurs' desire for independence and the People's Republic of China's repression of non-Han Chinese culture.

Also, since September 11th, 2001, the PRC government and local Han Chinese residents have deemed the ethnic Uyghurs as a threat to national security.

These tensions have culminated in several major incidents and violent clashes.
