Xinjiang primarily consists of several Muslim Turkic groups, including the Uyghurs and the Kazakhs. Other PRC minority ethnic groups include the Hui Chinese, the Kirghiz, the Mongols, the Russians, the Xibes, the Tajik, the Uzbek, the Tatars, and the Manchus.

Map of ethnic subdivisions in Xinjiang: The blue portions represent the Uyghur population, the red portions represent the Han population, and the yellow portions represent the Qazaq population.

Uyghurs remain the majority ethnicity in western Xinjiang, which includes the areas of Kashgar, Khotan, Kizilsu, and Aksu. Uyghurs are also the majority in the Turpan prefecture in eastern Xinjiang. The Han Chinese are the majority in eastern and northern Xinjiang, including the cities of Urumqi, Karamay, Shihezi, and the prefectures of Changji, Bortala, Bayin'gholin, Ili, and Kumul. Kazakhs are mainly concentrated in the Ili prefecture in northern Xinjiang.
