Artist's Statement
My most recent work brings together two of the media I work in--lace knitting and painting. For "The Dickinson Series," I have knit lace panels and stretched them over abstract acrylic paintings; each relates to a poem by Emily Dickinson. Some of them explore her thoughts about the eternal, some describe nature, others speak of longing, loneliness, and passion. The lace (white, in recognition of Dickinson’s preference for wearing white) both reveals and conceals the underlying painting, acting as a visual equivalent to the impulses toward self-expression and self-concealment in her poetry. The title for Finite Infinity (at left) is taken from this poem: There is a solitude of space
