The Korean War broke out in June of 1950 between communist and non-communist forces in Korea. After the war ended in 1953 North Korea emerged as a communist state. This has greatly contributed to the suppression of fundamental human rights that has been perpetuated since the war ended. Kim Jung Il assumed power in 1994 after the death of his father, Kim II Sung. This website will focus on the human rights abuses inflicted by the regime of Kim Jong Il.
