Why the Soviets Invaded Afghanistan

On December 24, 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. However, what was meant to be a swift and low-cost action, turned into a ten year long war. The war in Afghanistan  took thousands of lives and changed the political standing of two countries. The Soviet people began to seriously question the judgement of their government, while Afghanistan is to this day in a state of civil unrest.

The invasion of Afghanistan had not been intended as an act of war on the part of the Soviets. In fact, the Soviets believed that by invading it would be a fairly swift action, and that the Afghan opposition was virtually unable to defend its own interests. However, it turned into a quagmire, similar to the US "police action" in Vietnam.
