The Making of a Librarian

My current project involves me applying to grad school in the area of Library Science.  I believe that I would be a good reference librarian in a small public library and that I would enjoy this job immensely.  Librarians serve as the interface between people and information in a way that I find amazing.

My volunteer job:  I am currently a Techno Host at the Multnomah County Library in the Albina Branch (15th and NE Freemont).  I love this job.  I only volunteer a few hours a week so far, but I have asked to have more hours working there.  Right now I am primarily helping patrons learn about the technology at the newly renovated branch. In the fall I am scheduled to become a Homework Helper.  Homework helpers act as reference librarians to children and I am really looking forward to this new job.  There are a lot of great kids who come to the library.

GRE:  I'm taking the GREs on October 30.  Wish me luck!

Spanish Class:  I will be starting spanish conversation class through the local community college this fall.  No hablo español ahora, pero es muy importante para mí que hablo un segundo lenguaje cuando soy bibliotecario.  (If I got this right, this means, I don't speak spanish now, but I think it is very important to speak a second language as a librarian.)

ALA:  The American Library Association.

And one other really good page if you are not sure about what librarians do, or why I would want to be one...Librarians and Libraries by Erica Joyce Olsen.
