My high school did not even have enough Black students to fill a cafeteria table. Yet when I was in high school, I felt a futile longing to sit with others who understood me better and shared my cultural background. I was encouraged to learn that the psychology behind the УcafeteriaФ grouping was an aspect of racial identity development. In fact, I was impressed at how little I understood of the Black identity process, while at the same time making statements of УAha! I felt that way too!Ф while reading the documents on Black identity. Being in a predominantly white neighborhood where people wonТt listen or understand, and say УitТa misunderstandingФ or youТre being too oversensitive. you can only talk to other victims, other people of color. therefore, you you feel more comfortable. White peers are unprepared to respond. pg 60 even those who are willing and able to listen cannot share the experience. the psychological safety of their own group pg 72 Sadly, the grouping at the cafeteria may be counterproductive to ending intolerance and racism. By readily identifying with a group and purposely avoiding or excluding Whites, intolerance and hurt feelings are often spread. Often my White friends feel uncomfortable and angry at those situations. They feel purposely snubbed. I however, never saw it that way, because the situation is often in the reverse without w\them knowing it. How often do they sit at a cafeteria with only Whites? Far more often than kids who are Black group together. But being something other than White makes one stick out, and naturally gravitate to others of the same skin color to feel less alone. the tough teenage years of identity include racial identity, esp when one feels as if they are different vy appearance. Уgiven the impact of dominant and subordinate status, it is not surprising that researchers have found that adolescents of color У are more likely to be actuvely engaged in exploring their racial or ethnic backgrounds than White adolescents (pg 53 tatum) remembering how I played with barbies, and the doll I always made the villain was Maria, the only Latina doll I had. had I already internalized some unspoken message that white was right? perhaps I readily identify with e dating issue (pg 57) in a perdominatly white neighborhood, I didnТt get asked on datres. yet in upper el elementary schools, I had boys trying to sneek in kisses. what changed? the unspoken message that it wouldnТt be acceptable to bring home a non-white girl to meet mom was there. I was saddened while at the same time perplexed that some Blacks felt that to be Black was to be non-academically talented, and therefore felt compelled not to achieve as well as so they maintain their Blackness. This is not the only response. As a result of the stereotype, some Blacks feel the need to perform exceptionally in academics, in order to reject the false image placed upon them. I took a simlar route, myself. I was in an environment where I was the only Latina in school, and thought it was my responsibility to be a good example for my entire racial group. At least I had my entire family as role models Ц my parents, aunts and uncles are college educated, hard-working professionals. According to the readings and personal conversations I have had with Black peers, they are labeled as sounding too White if they do not speak with an urban city accent. It is no less ridiculous as when I am labeled with the insult gringa, even by my family, because I do not speak fluent Spanish. Accent stereotyping is insulting and ludicrous, but at the same time it allows me to understand part of the harassment that Blacks receive. Never thought about the reverse --- that wWhites feel more self sconcious and even guilty about their whiteness when groups of minorities hang together. But a peer group is important, as long as one is able to go from both ends of the spectrum (Murrell 190) internalized negative view, or rejection. I want to add to the rejection a few sub branches Ц there is the anger and retreatment from mainstream society, there is the denial of lackness, and there is the pressure to prove every sterotype false. Understanding the psychology behind the УcafeteriaФ scenario as an important aspect of identity development is important step to achieve tolerance. Certain aspects of the Black identity process I cannot relate to, but many I can. Fighting against the non-academically endowed stereotype, taking on the responsibility of representing an entire group, wanting to join and seek out others of my racial group for understanding and camaraderie, Christina R.
