School Profile Eleven department heads responded to my survey.
Many did not know an exact figure for how many students were in their school districts; some estimated and others left the question blank. The answers of those that did respond ranged from 1200 to 4167 and averaged 3311. There was one high school in each district, an average of 1.09 middle schools, and an average of 4.27 elementary schools.
The schools taught between 2 and 5 languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, German, Chinese, and American Sign Language. French and Spanish were offered at all of the schools. The average number of languages offered was 3.45.
The number of students in the district did not seem to be a good predictor of how many languages were offered; of the districts teaching approximately 4000 students, one school taught 2 languages, another 3, and two others 4.
