Student Profile

Twenty-one students responded to my survey.

Of the students, 7 were first-years (one intending to graduate a year early), 6 were sophomores, and 8 were seniors. I'm not certain why no juniors completed the survey; it's possible that all of the junior P.O. boxes that I stuffed belonged to juniors spending this semester off-campus.

All of the students had studied a language before coming to Mt. Holyoke; though not all of them answered the question that asked how long they had studied their language before college, the average answer of those who did respond was almost 6 years. 29% of their elementary schools offered foreign languages, 90% of their middle schools/ jr. high schools, and 100% of their high schools.

In spite of their exposure to language before arriving at college, however, few of the students had yet studied languages extensively while at Mt. Holyoke. (This is perhaps due to the many first-years and sophomores who completed the survey.) Three-quarters of the students had only spent one or two semesters in language study, and two of them had not yet taken a language class at Mt. Holyoke.

For those who did take college language courses, 10 students said their average grade was A or A-. 9 students said their average grade was B+, B, or B-. None of the students reported an average language class grade lower than B-.
