Chiapas

Chiapas is a state in Mexico. It is in the southwest corner, bordered by Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the poorest states in Mexico, with 40% of the population suffering from malnutrition. Much of the people of Chiapas are at least predominately Mayan and it is home to several Mayan ruins. A significant amount of the population of Chiapas is made up of rural farmers, and since so much of the population is indigenous, many do not speak Spanish.

Since the emergence of the EZLN, Chiapas has been in an ongoing state of war. The capital of Chiapas is Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
