Introduction

The history between China and Taiwan has been intertwined for centuries, creating a complex relationship between the two places. With the Chinese civil war, Taiwan became the center for Nationalists in China as the Republic of China, while the Communists took over the mainland and formed the People's Republic of China. Taiwan has become the center of a passionate debate between the Nationalists and the Communists, trying to decide how to reintegrate Taiwan into the mainland of China. Will Taiwan become Communist, or will the mainland of China become Nationalist? The common sentiment on both sides is a reunification of Taiwan and China, but the debate is around the ruling party that will rule the One China.

As the debate rages on between the Communists and the Nationalists, another question has been raised as to the future of Taiwan. Should Taiwan become and sovereign state, independent of China? Or should Taiwan become a part of China as it once was? In this debate, there is no definite answer, only questions and strong feelings on both sides of the dispute.

Throughout the dispute, both sides of the One China issue have found support in different places. For the Communist China, their main advocate was the Soviet Union who shared the common bond of communism. The United States decided to recognize Taiwan as the Republic of China, choosing not to view the mainland of China as a separate country, but instead as a part of Taiwan's government. As time went on, the opinions of different nations changed and thus changing the dynamic of the China/Taiwan issue.
