Resources for students creating web sites for the final assignment

As a final assignment, students in some sections will have the option of creating a web site that provides information and presents issues related to the course. This page presents useful information for students who will be doing this kind of assignment in the coming weeks. For some guidance on what constitutes a well-made web site for this kind of assignment, look at this page from Professor Ferraro's World Politics course. Your section instructor will provide more details on what is required for a web site assignment.

Workshops:
In the coming weeks, LITS will be offering a full schedule of workshops on web site design ('Introduction to Dreamweaver') and digital image editing ('Introduction to Photoshop', 'Creating Images for the Web'). These workshops last about 90 minutes and are taught by student instructors. You can find the schedule for LITS workshops and can register to attend a workshop on this page.

Student Web Technology Consultants:
The Student Web Technology Consultants (SWEBTECHS) are a team of students employed by LITS to teach workshops and provide web consulting services. These student web consultants are available for limited help in the LITS Information Commons at the hours listed below:

Connecting to Mount Holyoke network space:
Every student with a Mount Holyoke computer account has class web space available on the college network server. Web pages saved to this space will be accessible online. Web pages created for the final course assignment should be mounted in your class web space.

The instructions below describe how to map to your class web space from a computer that is connected to the Mount Holyoke network.

From a PC:
You will need to map a network drive. From the WinXP desktop: Right-click on the My Computer icon and select Map Network Drive from the menu. In the Path field of the dialog box, type "\\www\username” replacing "username" with your UNIX login name (the same one you use for e-mail). Click on “Connect using a different username” and enter your username and password. Click on “OK” and then on “Connect” in the Map Network Drive box. The next available drive letter will be used for this drive, as displayed in the Map Network Drive box.

Your personal network space will now be mounted as a new drive on your computer. You can, for example, use Windows Explorer or My Computer to examine the contents of your drive. Open the folder titled 'classweb' and save your web pages in this folder. Your home page should have the filename 'index.htm'.

When you are finished using your drive, right-click on My Computer and choose Disconnect Network Drive.

From a Mac:
In the Finder, go to the “Go” menu and select “Connect to server.” Type 'www' at the prompt, then click on “Connect”. When you are prompted to enter your username and password, enter the same username and password you use to check your email. The next display will list one or more volumes that you have the option of mounting. Select 'classweb' and click “OK.”

Your classweb folder will now appear on the desktop as a disk with a globe on it (OS 10.1-2) or as a sphere in a box (OS 10.3 and later). Save your web pages in this driver. Your home page should have the filename 'index.htm'. When you are finished using your drive, drag it to the trash to disconnect.

Sending your web site to your instructor:
When you have loaded your web site onto the network in your class web space, the home page should be live at http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~username/classweb (where 'username' is your MHC email login name). Send or give this web address to your instructor when you are ready to turn in your final work.
