The Sunshine Policy

The Sunshine Policy was adopted by President Kim Dae Jung of the Republic of Korea.  Through this policy, Kim kept a measure of friendliness with the North instead of the previous hostile attitude.  Starting with aid given through one of South Korea's largest corporations, Hyundai, Kim kept a steady, positive relationship with the North.  Jung Joo Young, former president of the Hyundai Corporations, sent enormous amounts of food, constructed new buildings and made trade agreements with the North.

The conditions were mostly favorable to the North in many ways.  The efforts of the Sunshine Policy has proven to be positive, as the Korean summit in June was brought into progress.  Already there have been two meetings for the lost family between the North and the South.  During the Sydney Olympics, the North and the South played in the games and marched in the parade together under one flag.  Overall, the policy has been an efficient way in dealing with possible unification in the peninsula.
