The portion of Alsace-Lorraine that was annexed by Germany in 1871 was made of these arrondissements from these departments:

Lorraine:

•Moselle department. Major cities: Metz, Thionville, Sarreguemines

•Meurthe department. Major cities: Sarrebourg, Château-Sahine

Alsace:

•Bas-Rhin department. Major city: Strasbourg

•Haut-Rhin department, except Belfort. Major city:Colmar
