Announcements

Oct. 15: The Mosier School as well as South Hadley Middle School have sent us a combined list of times when they would be happy to have a MHC math student serve as a tutor. If you are interested in tutoring and can give an hour (or more) regularly for the rest of the semester, please contact Prof. McLeod at your earliest convenience. Time slots are spread widely over any given day, and there are many openings. There are also requests for groups of tutors at certain times for certain classes. So there should be many chances to fit with your schedule if you are thinking about it. The list of times will be posted on Prof. McLeod's door, please sign up for those times that you are certain you can meet on a regular (weekly) schedule. Also, indicate when you can meet with me to set things up.

Oct. 4: If you are interested in participating in the Putnam exam, you need to sign up by October 8 so that we will be able to register on time. Thanks!

Sept. 23: The America Counts program is looking for any MHC student to help with math tutoring in grades 2 - 8. If you are interested, contact Marie Appleby at smsmappleby@yahoo.com. We had 4 students tutor last year and they loved it (talk to Diane Crenshaw who did it last year) and were very much appreciated.

The Physics Separtment is sponsoring the first UMass contra dance, geared towards beginners (at no cost to the Dept.). It is Mon. Sept. 27 at 7:30 pm in the Student Union Ballroom. Flyers will be available for posting in a couple of weeks. The dance is free, but a small voluntary contribution will be requested (with the hope of seeding the next dance in the series). For more info, click here.

The Blackwell-Tapia Conference and Prize Presentation will be held this year on November 5 - 6. It is a conference in Los Angeles for mathematics majors, graduate students and mathematics professors and researchers. Deadline for financial aid applications to attend is Sept. 24th. The program will include a mix of activities, designed to provide participants considering a career in mathematics with a sense of the excitement the field provides and a chance to learn about specific opportunities. For more information or if you are interested in attending, please contact Prof. McLeod at jmcleod@MtHolyoke.edu.
