Regional members from many African nations convened in Nairobi, Kenya to prepare for a Somali reconciliation conference that is set for April. The conference will include members of Somalia's Transitional National Government (TNG) as well as other Somali parties. The technical committee of the conference will include the nations that border Somalia, specifically Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. The committee is responsible for establishing the terms of the conference and deciding on participation at the event.

African committees have expressed grave concerns over the situation in Somalia since 1991. Many nearby nations are worried about the potential of spill over of discourse, violence, or fleeing individuals to their countries. If the situation becomes worse in Somalia there is a potential for a disastrous impact in the humanitarian issues of nearby nations. The conference is an attempt by neighboring nations to help to bring a peaceful end to the fighting and lawlessness that currently exists in Somalia.
