Opers and the Hitchin section

I will talk about one particular subvariety in the moduli space of local systems (the opers), and one particular subvariety in the moduli space of Higgs bundles over a curve (the Hitchin section), both of which are of representation-theoretic origin. Then I will discuss their respective images under the diffeomorphism provided by the non-Abelian Hodge theorem.
