Political Asylum in Canada

sad

Baryshnikov requested political asylum in Canada and stayed at a friend's estate while the formalities were being processed. His good friend Makarova arranged so he could dance with her in Giselle with ABT on July 27, 1974, which was the only performance of Giselle that season . Since Baryshnikov was still in Canada and was waiting for immigration papers, he was invited to dance in La Sylphide which was to be aired on television. After hs successful debut on television in the West he went to New York. There was so much hype about his debut in New York with Makarova in Giselle, the tickets quickly sold out, which was very rare in America at that time.
