The name "Macedonia" is very old and is usually related to Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. However, this is an ethnic map of the people who started to call themselves “Macedonians” at the end of the 19th century AD. The territories known as Vardar, Augean and Pirin are considered “Macedonia.” Today only Vardar Macedonia is in the Republic of Macedonia or Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, while Aegean Macedonia is in Greece and Pirin is in Bulgaria. |
