checkmail.pl

The script on this page will tell you not only whether you have new mail but how many unread messages are in your (mbox-format) mailbox.

Script installation instructions:

The script is located here.

% cd
% mkdir bin
% cd bin
% cp ~lbmelton/world/fun/geek/checkmail.pl.txt checkmail.pl

You will have to change the $mailbox variable to the path of your mail spool - most likely /usr/spool/mail/username.

% pico checkmail.pl

Save it. Make it executable:

% chmod +x checkmail.pl

Run the script by typing checkmail.pl at the prompt.
