Afghanistan has been riddled with violence since, it seems, the beginning of time. There have been wars fought over the land, from outside powers, from inside powers, even fighting between inside powers and outside powers. Afghanistan has had many different rulers and governments, and all of them have done nothing for the human rights of women, excluding King Amanullah, and his predecessor King Nadir Shah, who both pushed for modernization in the 1920's. Women in Afghanistan have suffered their entire lives under every form of government, the feeling of inferiority is so deeply engrained in them that they don't see it as inferiority, it is just their way of life. Although Islam, the major religion followed in Afghanistan, supports equal rights for both men and women, and tell men to treat their mothers and wives with respect, there has been room for different interpretations of some verses, causing extremists to treat women with violence and injustice and calling it the law.
