Terms For Those Who Might Not
Know the Basics

Loyalists-Those who support Britain, refer to themselves as British, usually Protestant

Nationalists-Those who support the Republic of Ireland, refer to themselves as Irish, usually Catholic
Sinn Fein- The Republican political party formed in 1905 by Irish Catholics living in Northern Ireland
IRA- The Irish Republican Army; military force of the Sinn Fein

UVF- Ulster Volunteer Force; formed to fight the Home Rule Act in 1912, made up of British Unionists
Bloody Sunday- Massacre in 1972, also a U2 song

12th of July- Protestant "Independence Day"; celebrates the victory over King James II in 1690

Orangemen- The term for the men who march in the 12th parades; wear orange in memory of William of Orange
William of Orange- Protestant ruler who conquered the Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne, 1690
Fianna Boys- Equivalent of Catholic Nationalist Boy Scouts; often future members of Sinn Fein
Apprentice Boys of Derry- Loyalist boys that march in the 12th parades

Good Friday Agreement- Agreement ratified by political parties on April 10th, 1998. Created the Northern Ireland Assembly.
The Northern Ireland Assembly- Created to give opportunity for Northern Irish to govern themselves from Belfast. Made up of 108 members elected from the people.
