Activism:

Sustainability & Environment

After studying abroad in Germany in Spring/Summer of 2007, I came back with a refreshed interest in the environment and sustainable development. My take on environmental action isn't so much, "Oh, the poor trees and birds" (though I DO love both), but it is more focused on, "What kind of world will my children and my grandchildren live in? Will they have clean air and water? Will they get to hike through the woods and swim in the lake?" So, to me environmentalism isn't just some hippie, alternative-culture fad; it's about conserving the materials we have and reducing waste, keeping in mind that today's actions have consequences tomorrow. Now, hopefully those of you who go "Bah, humbug" when you hear "Go Green!" are still reading.

  1. 10 Ways to Go Green from worldwatch.org.
  2. Menstrual Cups OK, the squeamish guys reading may skip this one. Ladies, menstrual cups not ONLY reduce waste caused by pads and tampons and save money, but THEY WORK BETTER. Forgetting about saving the rainforests here, imagine this- NO. LEAKS. EVER. Sure, it takes a little more effort to learn how to use it than a pad or tampon does, but once you've learned it you'll never want to go back! Buying one o' these babies costs anywhere between $20-40, but it lasts you a good 10 years. Check out Wikipedia's article for more info.

Other

  1. A Greyhound's Wish Are you thinking of adopting a dog? Does someone in your household have allergies to dogs? Consider greyhounds-- they're hypoallergenic, not to mention very friendly and extreemly sweet!! More importantly, greyhounds are bread to be race dogs, and when the dogs are done their racing days, they get put to sleep. That's why there are many orgs looking for people to adopt them. So, gain yourself a friend while also saving a life!
