Henry Stimson Mount Holyoke College Trustee 1894-1936

Stimson published one piece of anti-suffragist literature and
spoke on the subject often. His 1893 piece, "Is Woman Suffrage
an Enlightened and Justifiable policy for the state?" was written
just one year before he became an MHC trustee. Among the many
jems contained in his writings are:

  • "Granting woman suffrage would greatly increase the ignorant proletariat."
  • "Giving women the ballot would at once add greatly to the number of ignorant voters, and the mass with which every reform movement has to deal with would become so much more obstructive, making the situation so much more difficult than it is now."
  • "It will not secure better personal treatment for women. Despite the emphasis with which some women speakers repudiate the thought of priviledge, the fact that society rests on the possession of privlege as one of its corner-stones."
Can you believe this guy was a trustee at a college by, for and about WOMEN? If you would like to see the name of the STIMSON ROOM in the library changed to something else, PLEASE e-mail me with your suggestions!!! sbmclaug@mtholyoke.edu
