Children Living in a Crisis Situation

Throughout this website, it has become evident that the southern African crisis is much larger than one could possibly realize, and the children are just one small aspect of the larger picture.  It could be said that perhaps the children are being ignored because there are so many other crises happening at the same time.  There is a massive need for AIDS drugs to be shipped and distributed in the region, there is a major need for the construction of orphanages and medical centers.  The needs do not end there unfortunately.  The extent of these human rights violations lie much deeper than a violation of a convention or declaration.  The problems run much deeper than getting drugs to individuals or building medical centers.  The layers of this problem are yet to be uncovered.  Not one researcher in our study of this region has mentioned all the children that are living in the southern African region that go unaccounted for everyday.  With so many people dying every week, and the large spread of poverty and lack of organized government, there must be children living on the streets that are unaccounted for and no one knows or cares if they are dead or alive.  It is easy to understand how the government and people of this region underestimate and forget about the children.  The problem is so widespread that it is easy to think of no one except the problems you face personally.
We hope that you have gained a perspective on the devastating effects this disease is having on the region of southern Africa.  Although it is a difficult topic to digest, we have some suggestions for the citizens around the world who want to encourage their governments to take action.  Write letters to your local, state and national governments.  Write to the highest person that will listen to your thoughts.  In many cases, organizing a letter writing campaign and flooding the federal office with letters has more effect than one letter.  These children deserve to be helped and cared about.  They are being abused, neglected, and shunned by international governments around the world.
The children of southern Africa have no voice, and need someone to speak up on their behalf.  75% of them have no idea how to read or write, and all of them are in trouble.  Before this virus wipes out another generation, the international community must take an aggressive stance towards combating this disease that is terrorizing a region.  It is becoming more and more evident as every day passes that the international community is allowing an external killer (AIDS) take over and rule a region.  This is all these people know.  They don’t know any other way of life.  They are having children that don’t even have an 85% chance of living past the age of 15.  International governments are allowing another genocide to take place.  How long are we going to sit back and watch this take place for?  We, the international community, including the United States, already made one major mistake with the Rwandan genocide.  Let’s not make this crisis our next mistake.  The children of southern Africa need our help.  They never know when their last day is going to come to cry out for help.  Don’t make these families bury another child.
