The clenched jaw and slow turn, eyes narrowed
unfriendly. The clenched fingers
curled around a knee. Professors
meeting on a campus bench, autumn
concoctions, like a circus trick.
They hate each other. A harsh word
hate, I know, but no less true or
ill chosen, on my part, It began
years ago with some act of disrespect
or perhaps just a misunderstanding
and a failure to clarify
but still they sit together on the bench
passersby have no clue of the subtext
and might describe them as fast friends.
As squirrels clamor up nearly trees,
the professors smile grimace-like
and talk ancient philosophy.
